Heart to Heart

Sammy came downstairs to open Just Like Grandma’s early the next morning. Her burden had been somewhat lightened by telling Sheriff Jones just where she’d seen that fancy frat pin, but it created a new problem. If Brock had been doing something illicit at the lake, it was going to break Chelsea’s heart. While it was true that the happy couple didn’t seem quite as happy as they used to, Sammy didn’t want to do anything to upset her new friend.

Helen came in the door just a few minutes after Sammy had come down. “I’m glad you’re here. I think the two of us need to talk.”

She’d never heard that kind of weight in Helen’s voice before, and Sammy instantly began to worry. “Is everything all right?”

“Well, I don’t know. That’s something we’ll have to figure out. Why don’t you make some coffee and we’ll have a cup before we open? I think there are still enough baked goods to get us through part of the morning if you don’t start baking right away.”

With doughnuts and coffee, the two women sat down at the counter together. It was quiet and peaceful at Just Like Grandma’s, an unusual sight. Sammy wanted to enjoy it, but she was too worried that she’d done something wrong and had upset her boss. “All right. You’re killing me. Just tell me what I’ve done wrong.”

Helen laughed. “Oh, honey, not you! You’re the star of the show as far as I’m concerned, but don’t tell Johnny. I think he’s been enjoying the fact that his soups have been getting a share of the spotlight lately.”

“And they deserve to. He’s amazing, and he could be so much more than a short-order cook. This place could turn into a very upscale, gourmet restaurant if you’re not careful.”

Her boss laughed again. “Don’t threaten me like that! I don’t want a bunch of snoots like they get over at Rossi’s. No, I actually wanted to talk to you about Kate.”

“I’ve been wanting to talk to you about her, too. I think she’s a great person. I really do. And I even think she’s a great waitress. But she’s constantly disappearing right when I need her. If she’s got genuine problems, then I hate to call her out on it, but I worry that it’s affecting the business.”

Helen nodded. “The fact is that I have a restaurant to run. I can tolerate someone showing up to work late here and there, and I completely understand when someone needs to call in sick. There have been a few days when you’ve looked so tired I’ve thought about sending you home just to rest. But there are limitations to these things, and I think she’s abusing our kindness.”

Sammy sighed. “But she’s so nice. She doesn’t seem like the kind of girl to deceive us. Besides, she doesn’t get paid when she leaves. What could the benefit be for her?” It just didn’t make sense.

“There isn’t much of one, but I haven’t been in this industry for decades without learning a few things.
